Transform clothing & fabric items in need of repair through visible mending. Instructor Emily Bender, 2026 Westobou Artist-in-Residence
Skill Level: All Skill Levels
Instructor: Emily Bender
SUPPLIES: Supplies are included in the tuition of this class.
MORE ABOUT THE CLASS: Don’t toss it—transform it. In an era of disposable fashion, there is a quiet rebellion in picking up a needle and thread to make something last. This course is your hands-on introduction to the "Slow Fashion" movement, where we ditch the noisy machines and complicated tech in favor of the intentional, meditative art of hand-sewing.
We’ll begin by mastering the power of the foundational stitch, giving you the confidence to handle a needle like a pro. From there, we dive into the world of visible mending—the creative philosophy that a tear isn't a mistake, but an opportunity. You'll learn to turn rips, stains, and wear-and-tear into custom design features that tell a story, effectively turning your wardrobe into a gallery of your own making.
Whether you’re looking to save a beloved pair of jeans from the landfill or you want to add personalized flair to a basic denim jacket, this course equips you with the essential skills to reinvent your style. By the time we’re done, you won’t just be repairing clothes; you’ll be creating one-of-a-kind wearable art that is 100% unique to you.
