2027 Agnes Markwalter Youth Art Competition Entries - For Teachers

The Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art is thrilled to announce the 48th Agnes Markwalter Youth Art Competition and Exhibition, running from March 22 - May 7, 2027

ABOUT THE COMPETITION : This annual tradition not only honors the legacy of Augusta artist Agnes Markwalter but also follows the theme of National Youth Art Month. Teachers across the CSRA will enter work by their students that expresses their vision under the theme, Your Community, Your Story

EXHIBITION DATES: APRIL 24 - MAY 7, 2027

ARTWORK DROP-OFF: March 22-March 26, 10-5pm

ABOUT THE JUROR, Em Bender: Em is Westobou’s current artist in residence with an upcoming exhibition in their gallery set for early 2027. The most recent recipient of the Kath Girdler Engler Public Art Award by the Greater Augusta Arts Council, Em’s vibrant mural work and graphic design have set her apart as a professional artist. She also works in fiber art, with a focus in sustainable mending.


Key Dates for Your Calendar:

  • March 22-26: Student Artwork Drop-Off, 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM.

  • April 24, 10:30-11am: Awards Reception, invite only (teachers will receive advance notice of any winning students, guests will be limited)

  • April 24, 11am-2pm: Open Reception for all participants and their families to view the work on display. GHIA Family Day will be occurring at this time, for students and family members to enjoy instructor demos and the Spring Artists’ Market, as well.


Submission Guidelines

To ensure a diverse and high-quality exhibition, each teacher may submit up to three entries per division across four categories: Elementary School (K-2), Elementary School (Grades 3-5), Middle School (Grades 6-8), and High School (Grades 9-12).

  • Two-dimensional work: Must be securely mounted on backing board under a mat, not exceeding 18 x 24 inches (excluding matting).

  • Three-dimensional work: Restricted to a base size no larger than 15 x 15 inches.

  • Artwork in heavy frames and/or glass will not be accepted.

  • All entries must be available for the entire exhibition duration.

  • A completed Label and Waiver must be attached to each submission
