Larry Millard, NO VACANCY

On View in the Main Gallery at GHIA January 24 - February 28, 2020

February 28, 6-8pm: Closing Reception, free to the public

Larry Millard moved to Augusta, Georgia in August 2015 after teaching sculpture at the University of Georgia for 40 years. Having studied historic preservation in the College of Environment and Design at UGA from 2013 to 2015, Millard has been fascinated to learn about and explore the architecture, city layout and development of Augusta.

ABOUT THE SHOW: NO VACANCY

Millard’s exhibition, NO VACANCY, at the Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art, January 24 through February 28, 2020, will consist primarily of works created while living here. Augusta has provided a fresh look at the world and his new works reflect this in both the processes and materials he is using in his new pieces. Millard’s new discoveries in Augusta have impacted his thinking and influenced the development of his artwork for this exhibition. He states, “I have expanded my thinking about the world and what is valuable to the citizens of this region and want to share what I see in Augusta with others.”

COMMUNITY COLLABORATION

One of the opportunities Larry participated in leading up to this show was a unique collaboration with Gertrude Herbert Education Program Coordinator Cathleen (Cass) Yates. Larry created 36 wooden batons, like the type used in relay races in terms of size and shape. He then taught a workshop at the GHIA for students from Heritage Academy, who came to the Gertrude Herbert and spent part of their afternoon on October 31st painting two batons. One baton was for the student and one was for Larry. Those batons will be on display and for sale for $250.00 each during the NO VACANCY exhibition with 35% of the proceeds going to support the Gertrude Herbert and 65% of the proceeds going to the student artist. Each of the painted batons will be on display for the entirety of the exhibition. Those not sold will be returned to the student and to Larry.

Another part of his involvement in Augusta has been Millard’s service as a member of the Board of Director of the Greater Augusta Arts Council for the last four years. Through the Arts Council he has learned much more about the CSRA and the active arts community that Augusta has to offer. Larry is finding numerous opportunities to engage in the artistic and greater community that make Augusta a meaningful and enjoyable place to live.
