Work in progress by Joseph Kameen during 2021 residency
Westobou Artist-in-Residence
Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art + Westobou
The third floor of the historic Ware’s Folly building houses an artist studio space with room and light perfect for the creation of new artwork. The Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art and Westobou, another local arts nonprofit, have partnered to give space and resources to artists to create a totally new body of work within this space in the span of a year.
This artist-in-residence program awards free studio space to an emerging or mid-career Augusta-based visual artist for one year at GHIA. Westobou funds a stipend to the artist for research, tools and supplies to complete work for an exhibition in their gallery on Broad Street. The artist then teaches a workshop series to community members in the classroom spaces of GHIA.
Westobou aims to inspire creativity in artistic expression and community advancement. This inspired them to create a year-long Artist in Residence program for artists and creatives in the Augusta area in 2021.
The residency runs from January through December and application for the following year opens in March. Applications can be found here.
