Alex Foltz

Artist with a focus in contemporary realism and specialty in Oil Painting & Charcoal Drawing.

About the Instructor: Alex Foltz is a contemporary realist artist living in Augusta, Georgia. Foltz’s initial focus was in representational art, but quickly shifted into capturing light authentically, and using that to drive focus and create moods in his work. His time spent learning to paint from life has led him to explore a more traditional approach in landscapes, still-lifes, and portraiture, but has also informed his more creative and conceptual work. Many of Foltz’s paintings blend traditional style with surrealist subjects that explore consciousness, connections between humans and nature, and mortality.

Since 2009 Foltz has dedicated himself to the independent study of his craft. He works from His studio in Augusta GA on a mixture of original work and commissioned portraits. His portrait paintings have earned him second place in the 2025 Artfields portrait competition, and a finalist spot in the 2018 Portrait Society of America's Members only competition. His work has also seen publication in International artist Magazine, Sand Hills literary Magazine, and Basement Magazine. Alex teaches oil painting and portraiture at the Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art.

Art, for me, has always had it’s roots in authenticity, and I guess I want to celebrate that.
— Alex Foltz
