More about the class:
This two-session workshop pairs hands-on slab building with an introduction to terra sigillata (often called “ter sig”), one of the oldest and most elegant surface treatments in ceramics. Terra sigillata is a liquid suspension made almost entirely from the clay body itself. Through a simple process of mixing clay with water and a small amount of deflocculant, the finest particles of the clay are separated and collected. When applied to raw, unfired clay, terra sigillata lightly seals the surface and produces a distinctive matte sheen that highlights form and texture in ways that glaze cannot. It is an ideal finish for sculptural work and decorative vessels, creating a sophisticated, refined look with remarkably simple ingredients.
*Handbuilding with clay can be a physically rigorous exercise. The instructor is very hands on but please consider your individual mobility, hand strength, and ability to remain on your feet as the physicality of this workshop is continuous throughout each 4-hour session. In Session 1, you will be processing a full bag of clay for bowl construction and a half bag for terra sigillata preparation.
*Students will need to bring two clear quart containers with lids for taking home their terra sigillata.
