ART TO GO Activity 3

DRAW YOUR FAVORITE FOOD ITEM FROM A LOCAL RESTAURANT. Send us a picture of your piece to [email protected] and we will post it on Facebook and give your favorite local restaurant a Shout Out!

Inspiration for this activity comes from Claes Oldenburg (Giant Floorburger, 1962) and Wayne Thiebaud ( Cake Rows, 1962) who have used food as their subject. Look at their two pieces before you begin.  Don't forget Andy Warhol's Campbell's Soup Cans and how fruit is often used in still life paintings.

Ideas to get you started:

  • Claes Oldenburg loved to exaggerate the everyday objects he created - think about drawing your favorite dish as big as a piece of poster board and cut it out.
  • Use repetition like Wayne Thiebaud and repeat a small drawing of the food over and over again.
  • Create a mini version of your favorite item on the menu out of playdough. Don't worry if you don't have the right colors- do a colorful version of the food.
  • Use construction paper to make your food. Cut it out and paste it onto a paper plate.
  • After sketching your food on paper, outline it in black. Fill it in with watercolor paints, crayons, and/or markers.
