The Abecedary Project - Caroline Garrett Hardy

Main Gallery

Join us on June 23 for the opening reception of The Abecedary Project by artist Caroline Garrett Hardy.

Caroline Garrett Hardy received a BFA in painting and printmaking from Virginia Commonwealth University and a Master of Fine Arts from Cranbrook Academy of Art for printmaking and from Ohio State University’s Logan Elm Press for book arts. Caroline has taught and studied around the world including London, San Francisco, Georgia, North Carolina, and Virginia. She is a full-time artist now living in Williamsburg, Virginia and her work can be found in various collections, including the Mint Museum in Charlotte, North Carolina; The Vatican Museum in the Vatican City, Rome, Italy; The Victoria and Albert Museum in London, England; Brooklyn Museum, Brooklyn, New York; and the Rare Book Collection of the Tompkins-McCaw Library at Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, VA.

The Abecedary Project consists of handmade paper kimonos emphasizing a variety of design processes, with interpretations of words illustrating each letter of the alphabet. The kimonos have visually complex surfaces and use symbols, icons, and words to create narrative fragments. Hardy Garrett’s kimono-art is created in a collage-style with rubbings on rice papers and upcycled materials, digital imagery, and various paper-craft techniques. The complex surfaces become story-bytes which reflect attitudes about human nature. “I am motivated by Asian, indigenous, and Western aesthetics, the diversity of cultural perspectives, and by beauty.  A love of typography, design, history, religion, as well as a passion for paper motivates my work.”

The Abecedary Project will be on view in the Main Gallery June 23 – August 4, 2023. The opening reception is June 23 from 5 – 7 p.m., free to the public.
