200th Birthday

The Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art is a unique place where architecture, history, and a creative spirit combine to provide each visitor with a personal experience of visual art. Established in 1937 by Olivia Herbert in memory of her daughter Gertrude, the Institute exists to provide a creative outlet for all in the greater Augusta area who wish to explore the visual arts.

The Institute is located in historic Ware’s Folly (c. 1818) in downtown Augusta. Listed on the National Register for Historic Places, the Federal style mansion played an important role in the City of Augusta’s history and rich heritage over the past two centuries. Nearing its 200th birthday, Ware’s Folly is in need of your support! Become a sponsor or donate to the preservation fund today!

Where Do We Begin?

GHIA’s preservation efforts are guided by its House and Grounds Committee which is made up of highly qualified professionals with backgrounds in historic preservation, insurance, engineering, and construction. In 2016, 2KM Architects Inc. provided an extensive building assessment of Ware’s Folly to help prioritize preservation efforts. Phases of work have been established based on this report and fundraising efforts are underway. Kitchen and minor electrical upgrades have already been completed and were made possible through grants provided by the Creel-Harison Foundation. Phase I will continue with a full evaluation of the roof and gutter systems to address leaking and water damage, including repair; containment and repair to the leaking back porch; electrical upgrades; and a complete assessment of the elevator system for repair or replacement. Your support is what will save Ware’s Folly. Become a sponsor or donor today!
