Good things really do come in small packages! The Gertrude Herbert offers a wide range of
one- and two-day workshops for everyone from toddlers to senior citizens. Special
workshops for adults and youngsters enable students to acquire a new skill or create a
unique art project in just a few hours time. Our very popular family workshops allow
parents and children to spend quality time together while collaborating on seasonal art

EXPLORING WATERMEDIA I

This workshop series will provide students the opportunity to explore several watermedia techniques, thus enriching creative skills. Traditional Japanese and found collage papers incorporated with basic watercolor techniques will add texture and depth to the painting. During the second lesson students will explore the potential of adding masa paper, an inexpensive sumi printmaking paper, to create batik-type effects in watercolor painting. Bring a sack lunch. A supply list will be provided upon registration.

HANDWEAVING: HONEYCOMB

Students will complete a finished project while exploring “Honeycomb”, a Scandinavian weave that resembles a bee’s honeycomb. Enjoy learning about the many variations made possible by combining different yarns, use of color and the patterning of cells. This plain weave structure has many applications, to include pillow covers, a bag or a tote. Easy-to-understand handouts will be provided to reinforce what you are learning. All supplies will be provided.

THE HUMAN FORM AS LANDSCAPE: INK WASH

Come learn the meditative practice that is ink wash painting as you explore the human form. Students will learn to see how curves and twists of the human body can visually transform into a beautiful landscape-like ink painting. A live nude model will present students with longer poses, facilitating the technical requirements of working with a bamboo brush and ink. A supply list will be provided upon registration.
