2015 Summer Art Camp Theme: "Animals of our World"     

The Gertrude Herbert’s Summer Art Camp returns again with six full weeks of “artful” adventures for children ages 5–14. In addition to our always popular morning classes, our 2015 program includes six weeks of afternoon camp, with curriculum options designed to introduce students to an exciting range of visual arts media.

All classes will run Monday through Friday, with morning sessions meeting from 10 a.m. to noon and afternoon sessions meeting from 12:45 p.m. to 2:45 p.m. Students may register for any single session or attend multiple sessions for a more comprehensive introduction to the visual arts. All supplies will be provided. Students attending both a morning and afternoon session will need to bring a sack lunch with them.

June Sessions: Real Animals of Our World

Session 1: June 8-12;  Session 2: June 15-19;  Session 3: June 22-26

July Sessions: Imaginary Animals of Land, Sky, and Water

Session 4: July 6-10;  Session 5: July 13-17; Session 6: July 20-24

Morning Art Camp

Our morning campers will explore "Animals of Our World" through projects inspired by real and imaginary animals of the sky, land, and water.  Whether your young artist prefers working with pencil and paint or creating three-dimensional artwork, we’ve got options that match their interests! Choices include drawing, painting and mixed media, and sculpture. Instruction will focus on the use of color, line, shape and form, space, and texture as it applies to each of these concentrations. All supplies will be provided. All morning camp sessions will be held in our main building, Ware's Folly.

Afternoon Art Camp

All afternoon camp sessions will be held in our education annex, the Walker-Mackenzie Studio, located directly behind our main building. Children need not attend morning classes in order to register for the Afternoon Camp. 

Afternoon Camp Curriculum Options will include:

  • African Art & More: Students will create masks and dolls inspired by African art. They will also create an abode for their art inspired by an architectural style of their choice from homes around the world.
  • Handbuilding: Students will work with clay and air dry materials creating a variety of tiles, relief and sculptural works of art.
  • Paper Mache: Students will use readymade and handmade forms that will serve as a foundation supporting their paper mâché art projects while drying until ready for finishing with colors and adornments.
  • Basketry: Students will work with natural round reed as they create Appalachian rib-constructed hip or melon shaped basket.
  • Exploring landscapes with mixed media: The students will create a series of landscapes utilizing a variety of materials.
  • It’s all about the Selfie!: We’ll put an artistic spin on the popular “selfie” and challenge students to examine and interpret their own self-portraits using a variety of materials and styles.
