Tom Crowther - Be Careful of the Ants: Reinvention and the ART of Plodding Along

BE CAREFUL OF THE ANTS: Reinvention and the ART of Plodding Along is an exhibition of paintings and drawings spanning a variety of subjects, but it is predominately rooted in psychology of the self.

“Be careful of the ants daddy” is simply something my 3-year-old daughter shouts to me from the front door every morning while I am packing the car to take her to school, but it has become a phrase that stands for much more.   As long as I can remember, I have suffered from social anxiety, depression and panic attacks on a daily basis; I refer to these as the ANTS.  While I deal with these ants every day, some days are worse than others, and the ants take over.  Although my daughter’s sweet little phrase is referring to a time when she was bitten by an ant, and she is genuinely looking out for me, it has become a metaphor for dealing with these struggles. The parent--a strong, heroic protector vs. Ants--vulnerability, fear, and helplessness.
