Speaking Volumes: Transforming Hate

The Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art is proud to present Speaking Volumes: Transforming Hate in the Main Gallery. The exhibit will open April 29 and remain on display until June 3, 2016. While Speaking Volumes has traveled nationally, it has never made the journey to a southeastern venue until this April where it will debut in Augusta, Georgia at the Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art.

The story of Speaking Volumes began in 2003 when the Montana Human Rights Network in Helena, Montana, acquired more than 4,000 copies of white supremacist books from a defecting leader of one of the most powerful hate groups in the nation. The Human Rights Network, through a partnership with the Holter Museum of Art in Helena, implemented its vision of transforming the books into works of art with a positive message.

Speaking Volumes: Transforming Hate showcases the diverse work of 38 artists who have transformed thousands of anti-Semitic and racist books into an uplifting and dynamic exhibition. Nationally and regionally recognized artists developed diverse strategies when invited to turn the hate propaganda into thought-provoking art.

This exhibition creatively addresses a variety of prejudices experienced by many based on race, religion, gender, sexual identity, country of origin, disabilities, economic class, and age. By responding creatively to hate, injustice and violence, the artists in Speaking Volumes provoke ideas and conversations that encourage empathy for others and respect for social justice. Furthermore, it allows audiences an opportunity to exchange thoughts and experiences in a safe environment. Visitors, regardless of age, often participate in dialogues to share their own stories and listen to others, deepening empathy for those who are perceived as "different" and encouraging respect for social justice. Audiences depart with the idea that art can inspire change.
