Spring Quarter 3D/Fiber
These art classes will allow you to experience art in a very hands-on way, crafting unique designs from clay, metal, or fiber. Express your imagination as you create useful and decorative items for yourself or for friends. Learn from our professional instructors as you and your classmates work together to master new skills.


 
HANDWEAVING: HONEYCOMB - Ulrike Beck
3 Saturdays beginning June 7, 2008

Students will complete a finished project while exploring “Honeycomb”, a Scandinavian weave that resembles a bee’s honeycomb. Enjoy learning about the many variations made possible by combining different yarns, use of color and the patterning of cells. This plain weave structure has many applications, to include pillow covers, a bag or a tote. Easy-to-understand handouts will be provided to reinforce what you are learning. All supplies will be provided.

OXY-ACETYLENE WELDING, BRAZING AND SOLDERING - Roger Finch

This course offers the welding student instruction on how to use oxy-acetylene equipment to cut and join steel, aluminum, copper, and cast iron. At their own work station, students will learn the techniques of welding, brazing and soldering. All basic supplies, except the required textbook Welder’s Handbook by Richard Finch (available from the Home Depot, Lowes and local bookstores), are included in the materials fee. A personal safety list will be provided upon registration.

WHEELWORK: LEVEL 1 - Terrie Prouty
2 Mondays and 6 Thursdays beginning April 21, 2008

Beginning and advanced beginner-level students will have the opportunity to develop their skills in the various approaches to throwing functional ware on the wheel under the guidance of Terrie Prouty, who specializes in this area. Instruction will emphasize basic techniques. Forms will be thrown, altered, and assembled to create various vessels. Glazing techniques will also be addressed. Projects will be tailored to the student’s skill level. Participants will also have the opportunity to prepare bisque ware for the upcoming Raku workshop to be held Summer Quarter. Students must provide a clean towel each week. No extra supplies will be necessary.

WHEELWORK: LEVEL II - Terrie Prouty

Students may also prepare bisque ware for the Raku workshop to be offered in July. Students must provide a clean towel each week. No extra supplies will be necessary.

CERAMICS GLAZING, FIRING AND THE MAGIC OF RAKU - Terrie Prouty
2 Mondays and Thursdays beginning July 14, 2008

Experience the immediacy of Raku firing in this workshop. Both traditional and non-traditional methods of glazing will be explored. Raku clay for throwing will be available to individuals enrolled in spring and/or summer ceramic classes who wish to prepare for this workshop. The supply fee covers glazes and firing. Students must provide their own bisque ware. A limited amount of bisque ware will be available for a nominal fee.

CERAMICS & HANDBUILT FORMS - Carissa Doying
6 Saturdays beginning June 14, 2008 (Class will not meet July 5, 2008)

Students will explore beauty of traditional Majolica as they create simple forms in rich red clay using slab and coil techniques. Designs will be applied to the clay forms using bright colors, simple motifs and repetitive patterns. Anyone can make these beautifully bright pots—just bring your enthusiasm and plan to have a wonderfully creative time. Students must provide a clean towel each week. No extra supplies will be necessary.
