Many now own digital cameras but few understand the mystique behind all of the controls. This course will introduce students to the basics of photography and the issues unique to digital cameras, compared to film. Each lesson will focus on one major aspect of the exposure triangle, to include aperture, shutter speed, and ISO (digital film speed), with the culmination being an in-depth look at composition as the single most important part of producing a quality image. Weekly assignments and critique sessions will be a part of the learning process. The final lesson will be a field exercise designed to put the basics learned in class into practice. The supply fee covers the production of a digital montage of each student’s images, put to music and preserved on a DVD. Students must supply their own digital equipment.

This course is for students with little knowledge of the darkroom. Emphasis will be on the technical aspects of black-and-white photography, so that you can work more creatively with your camera and in the darkroom. Camera operations, use of equipment such as lenses, tripod and light meter, and correct film selection are among the topics to be covered. You will learn basic density and contrast controls for both negatives and prints, along with techniques for developing your film properly. Basic darkroom procedures, safety, printmaking techniques, burning and dodging, toning, archival processing, and print presentation will also be discussed. Explore the artistic aspects of photographic composition and develop your own vision while building a portfolio of personal images. Please bring your own 35-mm camera with manual controls; a limited number of cameras are available for classroom use only. Register, pick your first roll of film at the Institute and fill it with your images for evaluation during the first class.
