Spring Quarter Painting Classes

Painting can bring new meaning to life -- just look at any acclaimed piece by Van Gogh or Monet. Watercolors, acrylics, and oil paints can come to life on paper or canvas and express a variety of emotions. Take part in one of our exciting painting classes this quarter and discover the special beauty found only on a palette.

 
ACRYLICS: DOORS AND WINDOWS OF TUSCANY - Pat McMahon

Scenic photographs of Tuscany, Italy will provide the subject matter in this class as students work with acrylic paints on canvas. Instructional emphasis will include the use of color, light, shadow, texture and perspective in interpreting images of picturesque doors, window, markets and street scenes. Photographs of coastal scenes of Cape Cod will serve as inspiration in this class as students explore the medium of acrylic paints highlighted with India ink. Shading, color, figure and perspective are among the topics that will be covered as students seek to capture the texture of aging boats and docks on canvas. Beginning students will have the opportunity to learn the basics of watercolor and apply them to a subject of their choice. Bring a photograph, print or a still life for inspiration or an unfinished painting to class. A full-time watercolorist with more than twenty-six years of experience will provide guidance to help you achieve an exciting result in this medium. A supply list will be provided upon registration.

Learn how to capture the beauty of the summer season in transparent watercolor. Students will focus on landscapes featuring sea, surf, and sand in Session I. During Session II, creative inspiration will come from still life set-ups that include shells, driftwood, and other objects one finds on the beach. The class will help you acquire confidence in the application of modern watercolor techniques such as wet into wet washes, graduated washes, and the use of salt and masking fluid. Demonstrations, individual guidance, and a step-by-step approach will provide the foundation needed to achieve exciting results. A supply list will be provided upon registration.

Learn the basics or continue to develop your skills in this versatile medium. This class will help students acquire confidence in the application of wet into wet and graded washes, transparent layering, dry brush, scratching techniques and the use of masking. EXPLORING WATERMEDIA I - Lou Ann Zimmerman

This workshop series will provide students the opportunity to explore several watermedia techniques, thus enriching creative skills. Traditional Japanese and found collage papers incorporated with basic watercolor techniques will add texture and depth to the painting. During the second lesson students will explore the potential of adding masa paper, an inexpensive sumi printmaking paper, to create batik-type effects in watercolor painting. Bring a sack lunch. A supply list will be provided upon registration.

EXPLORING WATERMEDIA II: ACRYLIC ON PAPER - Lou Ann Zimmerman

Enjoy the spontaneity and vigor that comes from the art of oil landscape painting in the great outdoors! Individual attention will guide the novice as well as the experienced painter in the infinitely complex and changing world of nature. Students will paint quickly as they learn to capture the rapidly changing effects of light on objects through the creative use of color, value and intensity. The first class will assemble at the Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art. Students will paint from observation off-site for the remaining classes. A supply list will be provided upon registration.
